March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of
babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. In Georgia,
nearly 21,000 babies are born too soon and too small each year. The 2009 Windward
Challenge will support more than 500 families served through the March of Dimes
Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) Family Support Programs, which provides
education, information and comfort to families during the NICU hospitalization and the
transition home. Proceeds from the Challenge also will also support other project that
include training Atlanta Medical Center NICU nurses in developmental care principles;
educating parents on caring for their premature babies; and supporting the families,
including siblings as they bring the babies home. In addition, funds will assist with
customized support for Spanish-speaking families as well as a Bedside Reading Program
at several metro Atlanta hospitals. The NICU Family Support Programs enhance the
family's experience and promote crucial bonding within the family. March of Dimes
hope is that one day every family will know the joy of a healthy baby. |
